Humpty Doo Barramundi Wins Best Responsible Seafood Producer at 2026 Sustainable Seafood Awards
Recognised for pioneering environmental innovation and long-term community partnerships, Humpty Doo Barramundi is setting a new benchmark for responsibly grown barramundi.
Australia’s leading barramundi producer, Humpty Doo Barramundi, has been named Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Best Responsible Seafood Producer at the 2026 Sustainable Seafood Awards Australia.
The award recognises producers demonstrating leadership in environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and continuous improvement. Humpty Doo Barramundi was singled out by the judging panel for its pioneering saltwater wetland recirculation system and deep, long-term engagement with Indigenous communities through on-country aquaculture partnerships.
Dan Richards, Co-owner and CEO of Humpty Doo Barramundi, said, "This is a proud moment for our whole team and a meaningful recognition of how we’ve built our family business - farming with nature, not against it. For over 30 years, we've believed that caring for our environment, our fish, and the communities around us is what helps us produce the highest quality barramundi. This award encourages us to keep raising the bar, and we’re grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey with us."
Ellie Dixon, Market Development Manager at ASC, said, "Humpty Doo Barramundi is a compelling example of what responsible aquaculture looks like in practice in Australia. What stood out to the judging panel was not just the technical innovation of their wetland system, but how environmental leadership and genuine community partnership are woven together into one clear commitment. They are leading the way in the Australian seafood industry, and we're thrilled to recognise them with this award."
As demand for sustainably sourced seafood continues to grow, Humpty Doo Barramundi's ASC certification gives retailers, foodservice operators and consumers the confidence to purchase independently verified, responsibly farmed Australian barramundi that is backed by one of the world's most trusted seafood standards.
A farming philosophy three decades in the making
Founded more than 30 years ago as a family business in the Northern Territory, Humpty Doo Barramundi has always believed that producing premium quality barramundi and caring for the environment are not competing priorities.
This philosophy comes to life in the farm's innovative saltwater wetland recirculation system, designed to replicate the natural tidal ecosystem that barramundi thrive in. The closed-loop system filters water through native grasses, where nutrients are broken down by natural bacteria and microalgae - a highly effective, nature-based solution that supports fish health and high-product quality while reducing impact on surrounding waterways.
The judging panel specifically recognised this system as a benchmark for environmental innovation in Australian aquaculture.
Community at the core
Equally central to the award win was Humpty Doo Barramundi’s long-term commitment to Indigenous engagement. Through on-country aquaculture training with the community of Wadeye, the company is building partnerships that create meaningful social and economic outcomes for the people of the Northern Territory. The judging panel described this as a standout example of social responsibility in action.
Setting a new standard for Australian aquaculture
In December 2025, Humpty Doo Barramundi became Australia's first ASC-certified barramundi farm.
ASC certification requires independent verification against rigorous criteria spanning water quality, environmental impact, animal welfare, community engagement, and full feed traceability - confirming the company meets globally recognised standards for responsible aquaculture. The 2026 award builds on that milestone, recognising not just compliance with the standard, but genuine leadership in shaping what responsible Australian aquaculture can look like.
