Australia’s leading barramundi producer, Humpty Doo Barramundi, has been named Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Best Responsible Seafood Producer at the 2026 Sustainable Seafood Awards Australia.

The award recognises producers demonstrating leadership in environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and continuous improvement. Humpty Doo Barramundi was singled out by the judging panel for its pioneering saltwater wetland recirculation system and deep, long-term engagement with Indigenous communities through on-country aquaculture partnerships.

Dan Richards, Co-owner and CEO of Humpty Doo Barramundi, said,

"This is a proud moment for our whole team and a meaningful recognition of how we’ve built our family business - farming with nature, not against it. For over 30 years, we've believed that caring for our environment, our fish, and the communities around us is what helps us produce the highest quality barramundi. This award encourages us to keep raising the bar, and we’re grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey with us."

Ellie Dixon, Market Development Manager at ASC, said,

"Humpty Doo Barramundi is a compelling example of what responsible aquaculture looks like in practice in Australia. What stood out to the judging panel was not just the technical innovation of their wetland system, but how environmental leadership and genuine community partnership are woven together into one clear commitment. They are leading the way in the Australian seafood industry, and we're thrilled to recognise them with this award."

As demand for sustainably sourced seafood continues to grow, Humpty Doo Barramundi's ASC certification gives retailers, foodservice operators and consumers the confidence to purchase independently verified, responsibly farmed Australian barramundi that is backed by one of the world's most trusted seafood standards.

A farming philosophy three decades in the making

Founded more than 30 years ago as a family business in the Northern Territory, Humpty Doo Barramundi has always believed that producing premium quality barramundi and caring for the environment are not competing priorities.

This philosophy comes to life in the farm's innovative saltwater wetland recirculation system, designed to replicate the natural tidal ecosystem that barramundi thrive in. The closed-loop system filters water through native grasses, where nutrients are broken down by natural bacteria and microalgae - a highly effective, nature-based solution that supports fish health and high-product quality while reducing impact on surrounding waterways.

The judging panel specifically recognised this system as a benchmark for environmental innovation in Australian aquaculture.

           Community at the core

Equally central to the award win was Humpty Doo Barramundi’s long-term commitment to Indigenous engagement. Through on-country aquaculture training with the community of Wadeye, the company is building partnerships that create meaningful social and economic outcomes for the people of the Northern Territory. The judging panel described this as a standout example of social responsibility in action.

Setting a new standard for Australian aquaculture

In December 2025, Humpty Doo Barramundi became Australia's first ASC-certified barramundi farm.

ASC certification requires independent verification against rigorous criteria spanning water quality, environmental impact, animal welfare, community engagement, and full feed traceability - confirming the company meets globally recognised standards for responsible aquaculture. The 2026 award builds on that milestone, recognising not just compliance with the standard, but genuine leadership in shaping what responsible Australian aquaculture can look like.

Ellie Dixon, ASC Market Development Manager Australia said.

“Humpty Doo Barramundi has demonstrated that Australian producers can meet the highest standards for responsibly farmed seafood. This is a proud moment for Australian aquaculture. Humpty Doo Barramundi’s certification is more than a national first, it represents the future of aquaculture, this achievement sets a precedent for the industry and ensures that consumers in Australia and beyond can access responsibly farmed barramundi. This certification is an important step forward for the sector and a powerful example of the positive change ASC aims to drive across global aquaculture.”

To meet ASC standards, farms undergo a rigorous third-party assessment, where they must demonstrate a comprehensive commitment to responsible farming that protects the environment, safeguards fish welfare, and supports the wellbeing of surrounding communities.

This includes maintaining excellent water quality, minimising waste, protecting local biodiversity, social, welfare and health management practices. Farms are also required to show full traceability of feed and engage transparently with local stakeholders. Together, these measures reflect a holistic approach to sustainable seafood farming that balances productivity with environmental and social responsibility.

Dan Richards, owner and CEO, Humpty Doo Barramundi said

“We are proud to be the first Australian barramundi farm to achieve ASC certification. Strong environmental practice and high-quality aquaculture have guided our family business for more than 30 years and this certification confirms that our approach meets the world’s most trusted benchmark for responsible farming.

This globally recognised milestone supports our strategy of partnering with the world’s leading retailers, chefs and ethically motivated foodservice operators to grow the market for our high-quality, sustainably produced Australian barramundi. It also marks an important step for Australian aquaculture, demonstrating what responsible barramundi production can look like.”

Humpty Doo Barramundi’s innovative saltwater wetland wastewater treatment system is a cornerstone of the farm’s commitment to sustainable practice and is one way that it ensures it meets ASC standards. Designed to mimic the natural tidal and mangrove environments in which barramundi thrive, the system recirculates and treats water through a closed loop wetland network, resulting in low impact to natural waterways while transforming nutrients into plant and algal growth for onsite use rather than pollution. This nature-based solution supports fish health, production efficiency, and ecosystem protection, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to innovation, improvement and responsible environmental farming practices.

With the continued growth of the aquaculture industry, achieving Australia’s first ASC certified barramundi farm reinforces Humpty Doo Barramundi's reputation as a national leader, demonstrating that Australian seafood can be produced in a way that protects ecosystems, strengthens communities, and upholds the highest global standards for environmental and social responsibility.

Australians consume more than 350,000 tonnes of seafood each year, 65% of which is imported (ABARES, 2024). The Australian barramundi sector produced approximately 12,000 tonnes in 2023/24, representing a 13% growth since 2023, and the industry aims to reach a national production target of 20,000 tonnes by 2025.

What this means for the seafood sector

Retailers and foodservice operators can now source ASC certified Australian barramundi for the first time, supported by independent, internationally recognised verification

ASC certification helps supermarkets and suppliers meet growing consumer expectations for transparency and responsible sourcing

The achievement sets a new benchmark for Australian aquaculture and strengthens Australia’s contribution to the global shift toward responsibly farmed seafood

“ASC certification is a rigorous process that requires a significant commitment from farms to achieve. Our audit team, comprising both an environmental and a social auditor, conducted a thorough document review, engaged directly with stakeholders, and completed an onsite audit to observe production, verify environmental impacts, and interview staff across all levels of the operation. The auditors were particularly impressed by the strong emphasis placed on environmental responsibility and workplace culture at Humpty Doo Barramundi. What stood out most was the farm’s genuine and ongoing engagement with its community and stakeholders.”

Located on the floodplains of the Adelaide River halfway between Darwin and Kakadu National Park, the farm is shaped by its tropical environment. A long-term commitment to responsible farming has earned the company strong support from chefs who value provenance, flavour and responsible production.

For me as a chef, it means I can put barramundi on the plate knowing it’s not only delicious, but also raised with respect for Country, community and the environment. The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is the world’s leading certification scheme for farmed seafood – known as aquaculture – and the ASC label only appears on food from farms that have been independently assessed and certified as being environmentally and socially responsible.

Humpty Doo Barramundi is the first Australian aquaculture farm to incorporate the only Australian made compostable plastic pallet wrap into their operations, thanks to

           Great Wrap

           .

You can spot the difference when it arrives - this compostable wrap has a slight yellow transparent tint to it. This is so the end receiver can differentiate Great Wrap from plastic pallet wrap, then dispose of it effectively.

The material is compostable, biodegradable, doesn't leave behind any microplastics or toxic residue, and it doesn't compromise the quality of compost. This wrap meets the Australian standard for compostability AS4736. This testing guarantees it's 90% biodegradable within 180 days in the right compost environment, and breaks down to pieces smaller than 2mm within 12 weeks. If composting isn't an option, it will still break down in landfill, it just takes longer. For us it costs a little extra - but we think it's worth it.

We take food safety seriously and want to ensure that our fish arrives at its destination fresh and in the best possible condition. Unfortunately, this can mean a lot of plastic is used in seafood to enable these food safety standards are met. Swapping out our old pallet wrap for a compostable pallet wrap is just the latest initiative we have adopted in efforts to reduce the plastic we use.

Humpty Doo Barramundi has always strived to improve our environmental performance. We already closely manage our grow out water by recirculating it through our created wetland to reuse it again and again. We have also trialled many different replacement options for styrofoam boxes. Styros are perfect for seafood but terrible for the environment, and while there are more environmentally-friendly products being developed, most do not have both the strength and temperature control attributes of styro boxes. We continue to work with different products in this space and hope to announce a solution soon.

Humpty Doo Barramundi are trialling Black jewfish farming in a world first for aquaculture.

As Australia's biggest Barramundi farm, Humpty Doo Barramundi is well placed to trial new species of fish for farming, and we are working with Darwin Aquaculture Centre to develop farming practices for jewfish.

Also known as 'Mulloway' or 'Black spotted croaker' in other regions, jewfish are prized by NT locals for catching and eating. And their swim bladders are highly-sought after in Asian food markets where they can reach approximately $1000 kg.

The jewfish at Humpty Doo Barramundi are spawned at Darwin Aquaculture Centre in a project managed by Andrea Taylor since 2018. When they are large enough, they are transported to the Barra farm for extra care in our nurseries before being placed in their own cages in grow out ponds.

The 'jewies' are now about 300g in weight, are growing well, and are expected to reach harvest weight in about 2 years.

As the species has never been farmed before, there is a lot to learn about how the fish like to eat, grow and live before they can be farmed in any quantity.

Humpty Doo Barramundi is launching its smoked plate-size Barramundi in Australian Woolworths stores from 14 November.

Teaming up with Barossa Fine Foods has been the ticket to success for the Territory Barra brand. After several years of recipe development, different smoking methods and a long COVID pause, smoked Barramundi re-entered the to do list and hits the supermarkets mid November.

Investing $48M in Barramundi aquaculture

Humpty Doo Barramundi is delivering more aquaculture projects for Northern Australia

Humpty Doo Barramundi is investing a further $48.4M in aquaculture infrastructure in the Northern Territory with a new loan through the North Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF), matched by loan funds from the ANZ bank. The Minister for Northern Australia the Hon Keith Pitts MLA announced the approval today.

“This loan will take us further down the path of making Australia self-sufficient in saltwater Barramundi production, plus secure our supply of Barramundi through a purpose built Barramundi hatchery,” says Dan Richards, CEO of Humpty Doo Barramundi. “National Barramundi Day is the perfect day to announce this huge boost to Australian Barramundi aquaculture.

“As Australia’s iconic fish, demand for quality, Australian saltwater Barramundi is growing. We aim to meet that demand through improving our facilities to provide the best growing conditions, leading to a healthy, great-tasting fish.”

In his announcement, the Minister for Northern Australia said “The NAIF loan, alongside private bank co-funding, will support the construction of a purpose built hatchery for saltwater barramundi that will provide a significant boost to the Northern Territory’s aquaculture industry and generate economic activity in the Territory as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The new funding will support around 110 jobs during construction, and a further 160 jobs when the new hatchery is up and running.

NAIF support will ensure Australian-farmed barramundi will be available in restaurants at home, and around the world,” Minister Pitt said.

Humpty Doo Barramundi received a NAIF loan for $7M in 2018, which was also matched by ANZ bank. The result of that loan saw the business successfully deliver increased capacity for Barramundi aquaculture at their farm and increased employment, as well as a high-tech nursery facility, introducing a higher level of care for baby Barramundi before they enter the grow out ponds.

Humpty Doo Barramundi is a 100% family owned and operated farm. Over the past 27 years the family have built the farm to become Australia’s largest producer of premium quality saltwater Barramundi. This has been achieved through the multi award winning sustainable saltwater wetland system which cleans and circulates the water back through the farm to be reused again and again.

Humpty Doo Barramundi assists local farm create their 'fish compost'

Many people seek organically-farmed produce for health and environmental sustainability reasons. Humpty Doo Barramundi collaborates with neighbouring farm Organic Ag to provide any fish that die for Organic Ag to use as a natural fertiliser.

Organic Ag is an organic farm and online organic produce shop which has been trading since 2017. They grow 25 different lines of produce such as herbs, leafy greens, sweet corn and cucurbits - melons, pumpkins, cucumbers and zucchinis.

Organic Ag uses fish from Humpty Doo Barramundi to create their own chemical-free fertiliser on farm. The nitrogen and carbon within the fish break it down into a fish compost with the whole process taking around 3—6 months.

As the weather warms up, it is common to see dead fish in Territory waterways. The warmer water kills the algae; the decomposing algae absorbs much of the dissolved oxygen in the water, reducing the amount of oxygen available for fish.

It’s not unusual to see dead fish in our treatment channels, which are not aerated like the production ponds.

Dead fish are removed and transported to Organic Ag’s neighbouring farm to be composted and fed to their plants to grow lush, healthy organic produce.

Buy Aussie farmed Barra

Aussie Barra farmers are urging people to choose Australian Barramundi over imported fish.

Many consumers don't realise that 60% of Barramundi consumed in Australia is imported. Without labelling in restaurants, many assume that if it's Barramundi, it's Australian.

The closure of restaurants, clubs and pubs in an effort to flatten the coronavirus curb lead to reduced customers for Australian farmed Barra. Some farmers, Humpty Doo Barramundi included, have teamed up with other Australian-owned businesses to offer food hampers and hot meals to support hospitality workers and people facing hardship due to coronavirus.

A collaboration with PFD Food Services has also enabled Humpty Doo Barramundi to be made available to Foodbank customers.

"...they [PFD Food Services] process it into portions and bag to Foodbank’s requirements, freeze them and deliver to Foodbank in a few states,” says Miles Toomey, chief marketing and sales officer at Humpty Doo Barramundi. “It’s two Australian family businesses helping Australian families, because without PFD this would not have happened.”

Helping our hospitality industry in need

The social distancing measures introduced to protect Australians' health has had dire consequences for the hospitaltiy industry which was one of the first, and hardest, industries hit. Tens of thousands of people were unemployed literally overnight when restaurants were closed. While many restaurants and seafood woholesalers were able to pivot their business models and broaden their markets, many people were still left without an income.

We have been proud to team up with organisations around the country to contribute to the industry which is a large part of our livelihood, and whom we count on as friends.

In Victoria, Clamms Seafood, Chefs Pete Hilcke, Julian Robertshaw and Ian Curley, along with many many other generous people have been coming together on Saturdays to hand out seafood hampers and hot food to the hospitality industry as part of the #helphospo initiative. Finishing this weekend, #helphospo was captured recently by Channel 7.

In Sydney we worked with Moofish to distribute our premium Barramundi to the hospitality industry through Colin Fassnidge's Banksia Bistro.

Foodbank were keen to get Australian produce into the hands (and mouths) of people in need as the number of people relying on their services for affordable food items swelled. Humpty Doo Barramundi teamed up with PFD, another Australian family company, to cut and freeze our Barramundi in a suitable format for Foodbank to distribute.

We have also recenlty teamed up with Rockpool Group who are producing meals for needy people in Melbourne and Sydney.

The economic impacts of the coronavirus are still playing out, but when you consider these are only a few examples of people stepping up where they can to help out colleagues, or even strangers, who are in desperate need, we know we'll get through this together.

The trusted Australian Barramundi

Humpty Doo Barramundi is proud to be acknowledged as the 600th company to be accredited as an Australian Trusted Trader.

Australian Trusted Trader is administered by Australian Border Force. Australian businesses with compliant trade practices and secure supply chains are audited under the program which streamlines customs processes with important trading partner countries.

“While Humpty Doo Barramundi does not export large volumes of Barramundi at present, being an Australian Trusted Trader removes much of the red tape associated with exporting products and gets them to market faster,” says Chief Executive Officer Dan Richards (pictured here with Santha Nakandage, Humpty Doo Barramundi’s Sales Manager NT&WA and Carolyn Keily Director of the Trusted Trader program at Australian Border Force). “This is essential for perishable products like fresh fish.”

Australian Border Force have independently reviewed Humpty Doo Barramundi’s supply chain processes and have confidence that the business can satisfy World Customs Organisation standards http://www.wcoomd.org/.

“As a trusted trader we have been assessed as meeting the customs requirements of partner countries,” says Mr Richards. “That means while we are an accredited Australian Trusted Trader, our processes don’t have to be re-examined every time we export.”

Application to be recognised as an Australian Trusted Trader is free and open to exporters, importers and other businesses active int eh international supply chain. As well as reducing red tape, being an Australian Trusted Trader brings other benefits such as a dedicated account manager, priority processing and a ‘voice’ with the Australian Government at industry-level discussions.

“Our commitment to customers is to deliver our premium barramundi fresh, twice per week. We’ve built good relationships with our customers and they know they can rely on us to deliver on time,” says owner and Managing Director Bob Richards.

Humpty Doo Barramundi didn’t stop at airlifting fish out.

“The flood coincides with a delivery of new fingerling fish for our nursery,” says Bob. “So we will alternate flying fresh fish out and live baby fish in to the farm.” Bob expects to airlift approximately 300,000 baby fish onto the farm.

Continuous heavy rainfall over the past week saw floodwaters inundate the area and covering the main access road into the farm. However, the crew at Humpty Doo Barramundi knew just what to do. In February 2014, Humpty Doo Barramundi was cut off by flood waters and barramundi was airlifted from the farm before travelling by road as usual to interstate markets.
